The Minoan Eruption of Thera

The Minoan eruption of Thera, the volcanic island now called Santorini, ranks among the largest of the past ten thousand years. It broke out in the middle of the second millennium BCE, 110 kilometres north of Minoan Crete, and buried Akrotiri, a wealthy trading port on the island itself; fifty years of excavation there have reconstructed what the inhabitants lived through in the months leading up to the eruption. How much was discharged is still argued over. One reconstruction puts the magma and rock debris at 48 to 86 cubic kilometres; a 2023 study combining seismic imaging, seismic tomography and sediment analysis returns 34.5 ± 6.8 cubic kilometres and finds the pyroclastic flows much smaller than had been assumed, in agreement with an independent reconstruction of the caldera collapse.

Why it matters

The ash the eruption spread across the eastern Mediterranean serves as a single horizon to which archaeological chronologies of the Aegean, Egypt and the Near East can be pinned, along with ice cores, speleothems and lake sediments. Dating it therefore settles much more than one volcano. On Crete, the current reading does not favour a direct link between the eruption and the decline of Minoan civilisation, though tsunamis and atmospheric effects may have weakened Cretan society through shipping, trade and agriculture.

Dating & uncertaintyDisputed

Two bodies of evidence have not converged. Radiocarbon wiggle-matching on an olive tree buried alive by the tephra gave 1627 to 1600 BCE with 95.4% probability, a century earlier than traditional Egyptian chronologies; archaeological synchronisms place it between the mid 16th and the early 15th century BCE. Annual tree-ring measurements published in 2018 show an offset from the international calibration curve and move the radiocarbon range towards the 16th century, narrowing the gap without closing it. A century either way shifts the whole Bronze Age chronology of the eastern Mediterranean.
