The Late Bronze Age Collapse

Around 1200 BCE the states of the eastern Mediterranean, a linked world of Aegean, Egyptian, Syro-Palestinian and Hittite kingdoms, came apart within a few decades. Egyptian reliefs and hieroglyphic and cuneiform texts name the proximate cause as invasions by the Peoples of the Sea, at the Nile Delta, on the Anatolian coast and in Syria and Palestine, where armies clashed, famine-ravaged cities were abandoned and the countryside emptied. Climate records agree on a drought. Pollen from a core drilled in the Sea of Galilee gives about 1250 to 1100 BCE as the driest episode of the whole Bronze and Iron Ages, palaeoclimate data from Cyprus show abrupt change driving famine, and Near Eastern texts record drought and famine from the mid 13th century to the later 12th.

Why it matters

Naming a culprit has proved harder than dating the ruin. Migration, attack from outside, struggle inside the ruling polities, failure of the system linking them, inequality between centres and peripheries, climate change, natural disasters and disease have all been proposed, and none covers everything: the changes did not fall at one moment but spread over more than a century. Cline holds that no single smoking gun exists, only a perfect storm. What ends is a trading world; in the Levant settlement recovers fast in the Iron I, and cultivated olives return to the pollen record.

Dating & uncertainty

The date stands for a process, not an event. Destructions and abandonments are spread from the mid to late 13th century through the 12th, so ~1200 BCE marks the middle of a span rather than a year; the bounds given here, 3250 to 3100 years before present, hold that span. Treating the date as single is exactly what makes a single cause look plausible, and those who review the evidence warn against overprecise chronologies as much as against overconfident climatic explanations.
