The Plough That Opened the North

Northern Europe's best soils, heavy wet clays, defeated the Mediterranean scratch plough; the heavy wheeled plough, with coulter, share and mouldboard to turn the sod, unlocked them around the end of the first millennium. The effect has been measured like a natural experiment: regions with fertile clay soils grew faster, in people and in towns, once the plough took hold, and it accounts for something like a tenth of the growth in both across the High Middle Ages. Villages, open fields and ox-teams were reorganized around it.
Why it matters
A curved board of wood helped tilt Europe's centre of gravity from the Mediterranean toward the northern plains, where the continent's later powers grew. That technology can remake geography is an old claim; what is new is that it can be tested, soil maps set against the growth of towns. The ridge-and-furrow corrugations the plough left still ripple under English pastures, a medieval machine's signature readable from the air.
Dating & uncertainty
The heavy mouldboard plough had its breakthrough around the close of the first millennium CE. The test is econometric: regions of fertile clay, which the older scratch plough could not properly work, urbanized and grew faster after its adoption, and the plough accounts for about a tenth of the High Middle Ages' rise in towns and population density; bioarchaeology is now testing the crop rotations and wider cultivation that came with it.
