Africa and Asia Meet on One Island

Madagascar sits about 400 kilometres off Africa, yet its language descends from the Barito group of Borneo, an ocean away. Genetics answers part of the riddle: every Malagasy population tested carries both Bantu and Austronesian ancestry, and the pattern points to two separate colonizations, African and Asian, that met on the island around a thousand years ago. The blending was uneven, Asian ancestry better preserved in maternal lines and inland than on the coast, and while most of the vocabulary is Austronesian, only one third of the genome, on average, recalls Island Southeast Asia.

Why it matters

The distance between where the Malagasy live and where their language was born is among the greatest in the world, and it records one of the boldest voyages of the sailing age, across the width of the Indian Ocean. Madagascar also shows how fast history writes itself into DNA: a few centuries sufficed to produce readable genetic structure between regions of the island. Words, genes and boats each kept a different piece of the story.

Dating & uncertainty

Genome-wide data from 2,704 Malagasy record recent admixture and demographic growth, and suggest a rapid settlement within the last millennium; the anchor marks that take-off. Earlier visits are argued from archaeology, so the date retained is that of the settlement, not of the first landfall. The genomic pattern favours two separate colonizations, African and Asian, that met on the island, rather than the arrival of a people already blended elsewhere.
