On the Origin of Species

In November 1859, a single sustained argument replaced the static, created world with a genealogical one: populations vary, variants leave unequal numbers of descendants, and given time this shapes species. Darwin's book won readers over to evolution quickly; the engine he proposed, natural selection, took longer, and in its first years was borrowed as a cultural weapon more often than it was used as a research tool. It is the one theory under which everything on this timeline stands together.

Why it matters

Every entry in this edition, from fossil skulls to ancient genomes, is downstream of this idea: that the living world has a history, and that the history is legible. Darwin built the argument without knowing what heredity was; the mechanism would lie unread in Mendel's peas, and the two halves met only in the twentieth century. Rarely has one book so completely reorganized what a species thinks it is.

Dating & uncertainty

The book appeared on 24 November 1859 and sold out at once. What, in it, was inevitable is still debated: evolution was discussed before Darwin and might have prevailed without him, while counter-factual readings grant natural selection itself neither forerunner nor co-discoverer in the full sense, and it might have waited long for another mind.
