Germs Get the Blame

Within one generation, medicine changed its enemy: not miasmas or humours but living organisms. In 1876 Koch showed that anthrax was the work of a bacterium, and in 1882 he unveiled the bacillus of tuberculosis, then the commonest cause of death in Europe and North America; his postulates, culture plates and stains gave the accusation a method. Rivalry with Pasteur's school spurred the pace, and a golden age of bacteriology named the agents of cholera, plague and more within two decades.

Why it matters

Germ theory turned disease from a fate into an address: once a killer has a name and a habitat, water can be filtered, wounds disinfected, vaccines aimed, drugs designed. Few ideas in science have saved more lives. It also shows how an idea wins in science, not by being announced but by arriving with tools anyone can pick up to check it and carry it further.

Dating & uncertainty

The anchor is Koch's announcement, on 24 March 1882, of the tuberculosis bacillus, which at last gave a visible cause to the disease that then killed more people than any other in Europe and North America. The wider shift ran from the 1870s, with Koch's anthrax work and Pasteur's parallel campaigns, through the 1880s, as postulates, plates and stains turned 'bad air' into identified organisms, one disease at a time.
