In April 1953, Watson and Crick proposed that DNA is a double helix of paired bases. Their paper appeared alongside the King's College X-ray work of Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins, whose data, Franklin's above all, had made the model possible. The structure's two complementary strands immediately suggested how heredity copies itself.

The double helix founded molecular biology, and the story of its discovery has become science's own parable about how credit and knowledge actually move: brilliance, rivalry, and a woman's data used without her knowledge.

Dating & uncertainty

The double-helix papers appeared in Nature on 25 April 1953, Watson and Crick's model alongside the King's College X-ray evidence. That model rested critically on Rosalind Franklin's diffraction data, which reached Cambridge without her being told; she died in 1958, before the Nobel that could not include her.
