The Black Death

A bacterium killed something like half of Europe in five years. Seven centuries later its genome was reconstructed from the teeth of people it had killed, buried in a London plague pit, and its closest known ancestor turned up in a cemetery in the Tian Shan, the region the pandemic seems to have come from.
Why it matters
The deadliest documented event in human history, and the first pandemic whose cause was named by reading the dead rather than the records. What was recovered was not a trace of the disease but the pathogen's own genome, and the method has since been carried back to earlier outbreaks: it placed the sixth-century plague in the British Isles, where the written accounts had been too ambiguous to settle the question.
Dating & uncertainty
The dates come from written records. What ancient DNA added is the culprit, Yersinia pestis, sequenced from the teeth of London plague victims, and a source region traced to early fourteenth-century central Eurasia.
