Fire Learns to Pump

The first steam engines were pumps: Newcomen's atmospheric machines, set to drain flooded mines from about 1712, burning coal at the pithead to lift water. For seventy years steam belonged to the mines. The 1780s gave it rotary motion, and with it the mills; the nineteenth century added high pressure, locomotion and ubiquity. Growth accounting delivers the surprise: steam's peak effect on British growth came only after 1850, almost a century and a half after the first engine coughed to life.
Why it matters
Steam broke the ancient budget in which all work came from muscle, wind and falling water, and hitched civilisation to fossil carbon instead, a bargain still being paid for. Its history is also a lesson in patience: the emblematic invention of the industrial revolution added little to growth for a century. An energy transition takes far longer than the invention that starts it.
Dating & uncertainty
Newcomen's atmospheric engines appear at the dawn of the eighteenth century, at first only to drain mines; 1712 marks the earliest documented working engine. The decisive turns came later: rotary motion in the 1780s opened industry to steam, and growth accounting places the technology's macroeconomic peak only after 1850, with high-pressure engines, roughly a century after Watt.
