The Amniotic Egg

An egg that carries its own pond: the embryo floats in fluid inside one membrane, a second lets it breathe, a third stores its waste, and a shell holds the whole thing together. Vertebrates no longer had to return to water to breed. The group that made this egg split almost at once into two branches: one holds the mammals, the other the reptiles and birds.
Why it matters
Without this egg, land vertebrates stay tethered to ponds and rivers. With it, they reach the dry interiors, and both of the great land lineages we still live among start from the same shell.
Dating & uncertaintyDisputed
Body fossils place the first amniotes near 318 Ma, but Australian trackways published in 2025 carry clawed prints attributed to an amniote back to about 356 Ma. If the tracks hold, the group is at least 35 million years older than its oldest skeletons.
