Farming's Boom and Bust

Farming did not simply set European numbers climbing. Most regions show the same rhythm in the radiocarbon record: a rapid rise in population after farming arrives locally, then a crash to levels far below the peak. The busts fall on different regions at different times, which tells against one shared trigger such as climate and points instead to causes inside the farming societies themselves, though what exactly failed, soils, herds, health or social fabric, is still in dispute.
Why it matters
The first farmers did not walk a smooth ramp from village to civilisation; they rose and crashed, repeatedly, for millennia. That rewrites the moral usually drawn from the Neolithic: agriculture raised the ceiling on human numbers but made the floor tremble. And the argument over the method carries a lesson of its own in how to read an absence: a dip in dated hearths is not automatically a dip in people.
Dating & uncertainty
The pattern is read from summed radiocarbon dates taken as a proxy for population, across twelve European regions between 8,000 and 4,000 years ago; the busts are regional and unsynchronised, which argues for internal causes rather than one shared catastrophe. The proxy itself is debated: a change in burial customs, in subsistence or in where archaeologists dig can bend the radiocarbon curve without a single person more or less.
