Tam Pa Ling, Sapiens in Southeast Asia

Tam Pa Ling is a cave in the mountains of northern Laos, excavated since 2009, which has yielded a series of Homo sapiens fossils. Study of the sediments indicates that the bones washed in gradually from the slope above rather than being left by people living inside, so their age is read from the deposit that carried them and from the animal teeth it contains. A cranium published in 2012 received a minimum age of 51,000 to 46,000 years, from radiocarbon and luminescence dating of the surrounding sediments, and a maximum age of about 63,000 years from uranium dating of the bone itself. Deeper layers later produced a frontal bone and a fragment of shin bone. Luminescence dating of the sediments, uranium series dating and combined uranium series and electron spin resonance dating of mammal teeth, brought together in a Bayesian model, place the frontal bone at 70,000 ± 3,000 years and the shin fragment at 77,000 ± 9,000.

Why it matters

Genetic and archaeological data place a rapid movement out of Africa and into Southeast Asia by at least 60,000 years ago. Tam Pa Ling adds the interior of the mainland to that picture, in mountains rather than on a coast, and at an earlier date. The shape of the frontal bone points to descent from a slender population arriving from elsewhere, rather than to local evolution from archaic groups or to mixture with them. One distinction the fossils do not settle: being present early and standing among the ancestors of living populations are two different claims, and bone carries only the first.

Dating & uncertainty

The two deep fossils are dated through the sediment that enclosed them, not directly: the frontal bone at 70,000 ± 3,000 years, the shin fragment at 77,000 ± 9,000, which brackets the presence between about 86,000 and 68,000 years. The cranium found higher up was contested at once: its direct uranium age of about 63,000 years sits above sediments dated to 46,000, and a comment in the same journal read this as a bone that had worked its way down into older layers, leaving it no more than 46,000 years old. The deeper finds, reported eleven years later, rest on a wider set of measurements.
