Rice Learns to Hold Its Grain

In the lower Yangtze valley, rice crossed from gathered grass to crop through a slow bargain: plants whose grains stayed on the stalk, useless for wild seeding, were exactly the ones harvesters kept and resowed. Rice cells leave casts of silica, and those phytoliths can be dated directly: at Shangshan they are about 9,400 years old, and their shape sits closer to domesticated rice than to wild. Spikelet bases from neighbouring sites then show wild, intermediate and non-shattering forms mingling for millennia afterwards.
Why it matters
A third of humanity eats from this event daily. Rice also shows, stage by stage, how long domestication really takes: its wild ancestors grew by the Yangtze at least a hundred thousand years ago, people gathered it, then cultivated it long before it changed, and the changed grain remade the people in turn, anchoring them to paddies, seasons and each other. East Asia's demographic history leans heavily on this grass.
Dating & uncertainty
Direct radiocarbon dating of the rice remains themselves, through their phytoliths, gives about 9,400 years at Shangshan, and that is the date this fiche carries. A 2024 phytolith sequence from the same region reads domestication at about 11,000 years ago, at the end of a much longer apprenticeship: wild rice gathered about 24,000 years ago, then cultivated about 13,000 years ago while its grain was still wild in form. Whichever date one takes, the plant was gathered and grown long before it was fully domesticated.
