Mountains Made to Order

In eight decades or so of the twenty-sixth century BCE, Egypt quarried, moved and set some ten million tonnes of stone into the three pyramids of Giza, Khufu's alone rising 146 metres, the tallest building on Earth for nearly four millennia. Around the monuments, archaeology finds the machine that made them: workers' towns, bakeries, ration lists, harbours taking in stone and timber from hundreds of kilometres away.

Why it matters

A pyramid is administration made visible. Feeding, housing and directing tens of thousands of labourers in rotation, decade after decade, is the real wonder; the geometry is what an early state could do once writing, taxation and logistics existed. Nothing says more plainly, in stone, what concentrated organisation, and concentrated power over other people's labour, have meant from the start.

Dating & uncertainty

Egyptian historical chronology floats on reign lengths; radiocarbon modelling anchors it, placing Djoser's accession between 2691 and 2625 BCE and Khufu's Great Pyramid conventionally near 2560 BCE. New high-precision radiocarbon dates have settled the long High-versus-Low chronology dispute for the Old Kingdom in favour of the older readings.
