Accounting Becomes Writing

Writing began as bookkeeping. In the temple district of Uruk, in southern Mesopotamia, administrators around 5,200 years ago pressed signs into clay to record rations, herds and deliveries: proto-cuneiform, whose basic signs have precursors in the motifs that seals had been rolling onto clay before anyone could read. For centuries the tablets record no poetry and no kings' boasts, only who owes what to whom.

Why it matters

With writing, knowledge stopped dying with its holders; every later archive, law, scripture and science rests on this Mesopotamian invention, made for warehouse arithmetic. The story of counting tokens turning into tablets is neater than the excavations allow: tokens went on serving administrators for two thousand years after the first script, alongside it rather than replaced by it. What the clay shows is not a lone genius but accountants under pressure, piling one device on another until their marks could carry words.

Dating & uncertainty

The earliest proto-cuneiform tablets, from the Eanna precinct of Uruk, date to roughly 3300 to 3100 BCE, about 5,300 to 5,100 years ago. Egyptian writing appears within the same century or so; which of the two came first, and whether either owed anything to the other, is still open.
