Harbin, the Denisovan Skull

The Harbin cranium is a nearly complete archaic human skull from north-eastern China, brought out during the rebuilding of a bridge. Its recovery followed no protocol and its history since discovery stayed long and confused, so its provenance had to be reconstructed after the fact, from the chemistry of the sediment lodged in its nasal cavity. Among Middle Pleistocene human fossils it is one of the best preserved: a long, low braincase of about 1,420 millilitres, within the modern range, above a wide, low face with large square orbits and a heavy brow ridge. Its first description, in 2021, set it in a lineage of its own beside the Dali and Xiahe fossils, under the name Homo longi. Two studies published in 2025 recast that. Ninety-five proteins recovered from the bone carry three Denisovan variants and group the individual with Denisova 3, and mitochondrial DNA taken from its dental calculus falls within Denisovan variation.

Why it matters

Denisovans had been known chiefly through genomes and proteins, from fossils too fragmentary to show what they looked like. Attaching the name to a nearly complete skull gives the lineage a face, and lets other incomplete East Asian fossils be measured against a specimen rather than a sequence. The mitochondrial branch read at Harbin is close to one carried by early Denisovans at Denisova Cave, in southern Siberia: the group ranged widely across Middle Pleistocene Asia. The DNA came from dental calculus, a tooth and the petrous bone having yielded none: hardened plaque becomes a place to look.

Dating & uncertainty

146,000 years is a floor and not an age. Ten uranium-series measurements made directly on the cranium show it is older than that, without saying by how much. The upper limit comes from elsewhere: the sediment lodged in the nasal cavity matches, by its strontium isotopes, a core drilled where the skull was found, which places the fossil in the upper Huangshan Formation, constrained by luminescence between 309,000 and 138,000 years. The two together give 309,000 to 146,000. The name is disputed apart from the age: a new species in 2021, a Denisovan population in 2025, on the same fossil.
