Dolní Věstonice, the Oldest Ceramics

Dolní Věstonice is an open-air settlement of southern Moravia, Czech Republic, occupied around 29,000 years ago by the Gravettian culture, locally called Pavlovian. Its inhabitants made the oldest ceramics known: more than 5,000 fired-clay artefacts have been recorded at the site, animal and human figurines and countless fragments, among them the Venus of Dolní Věstonice, the largest and best-preserved clay human figurine of the Palaeolithic, shaped from a single lump. This is not pottery: none of these objects is a vessel, and the first pots appear ten thousand years later, in East Asia. The paste is the local loess, a wind-blown silt identical to the soil of the site, fired in hearths at 500 to 800 degrees according to the 1989 study. Many fracture surfaces show thermal shock, although loess expands little when heated: the figurines burst in the fire, and shaping, firing and sometimes exploding them may have been their prime function.
Why it matters
Fire turns a soft sediment into a hard material that did not exist before, and the people of Dolní Věstonice mastered that transformation more than ten thousand years before anyone used it to make a pot. Their purpose seems to have been the act rather than the object, which may be why the technique left no descendants: the Croatian figurines of Vela Spila, 10,000 years younger, are read as an independent invention. A study of 489 pieces published in 2024 adds that many are the work of novices, often children, so the first ceramics in the world may also record learning through play.
Dating & uncertainty
The Pavlovian occupation of Dolní Věstonice I and Pavlov I is placed at about 31,000 to 27,000 calendar years, the bounds retained here around ~29,000 years; a 2024 study frames the culture more broadly at 30,000 to 25,000 years. Older publications quote younger figures because they give uncalibrated radiocarbon years; calibration, which corrects for past variations in atmospheric carbon-14, brings them into the range above: both kinds of figure describe the same layers. Whichever end of the range is preferred, the ten-thousand-year gap before the Vela Spila figurines and a lead of the same order over the first pots do not change.
