The Oldest Story Ever Painted

On the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, a painted panel shows human-like figures interacting with a wild pig; calcite grown over the pigment dates the scene to at least 51,200 years ago, the oldest known figurative art and the oldest depicted story. A neighbouring cave holds a hunting scene at least 50,200 years old, whose figures appear to be part human, part animal. Europe's celebrated caves came later.

Why it matters

Art history no longer begins in Europe. The oldest figurative images we have are Indonesian, on the far side of the sea crossings, which suggests that image-making travelled in the minds of the migrants rather than being invented at journey's end. And these first paintings already tell stories, one of them peopled with beings that mix human and animal: imagination arrives on the wall fully formed, or its earlier chapters simply have not survived.

Dating & uncertainty

These are minimum ages: uranium-series dating of the calcite that grew over the paint shows the art beneath to be at least 53,500 +/- 2,300 years old at Leang Karampuang, hence painted 51,200 years ago at the latest. How much earlier the brush actually passed, no method can yet say.
