The Bow Is Drawn

Tiny crescents of quartz from Sibudu Cave, in South Africa, carry wear, residues and impact fractures suggesting that many of them tipped arrows shot from bows around 64,000 years ago; some armed barbs as well as points. No bow survives from that world: the weapon is reconstructed entirely from what stone remembers, tested against modern hunting experiments with replica arrows and spears.
Why it matters
A bow stores the body's slow strength and releases it in a flash: it is the oldest known machine to hold energy for its owner. Killing at a distance changed what could be hunted and how safely; the fine cords, glues and shafts it needs point to crafts that have left no trace. That the earliest evidence for it is African, and this old, quietly redraws where and when technical modernity begins.
Dating & uncertainty
The Sibudu layers holding these quartz crescents date to 64,700 to 61,700 years by optically stimulated luminescence. The bow itself is inferred, not found: wood, cord and feathers almost never survive. The case is built on wear traces, residues and fracture patterns on stone tips whose size and damage fit arrows better than hand-thrown spears, checked against hunting experiments.
